The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into operation on 5 December 2005 and enables a same-sex couple to register as the civil partners of each other. A Civil Partnership can be registered in England and Wales in a register office or in approved premises. In order to register a civil partnership you must first give notice of your intention to register a civil partnership and once given your name is publicized by the registration authority for a period of 15 days. Once notice is given, the notice is valid for 12 months.
