 | | SOUTHAMPTON Southampton is only 7 miles from the Eastern fringes of the new forest and is sandwiched between Bournemouth and Portsmouth. It is surrounded by the Rivers, Itchen, Test and Hamble and fronts Southampton Water.
Southampton is one of Britain’s most historic ports. It has a bustling city centre with modern shopping facilities and many beautiful parks and open spaces. Large parts of the Centre of Southampton were destroyed during the second World War, however remaining is an impressive length of medieval town wall, which nestles amongst the town’s numerous, pubs, clubs and bars. Southampton is well served by hotels and many new forest hotels are nearby.
Southampton's premier port is a familiar home to many of the world’s modern super liners. It was also the embarkation point for the ill fated Titanic and the historic Mayflower, and today passengers for the transatlantic crossing to New York board at Southampton.
Southampton boasts its own theatre, a large cinema complex and is home to the world famous Boat Show. Transport facilities include a main line station to London Waterloo and ferries to both Hythe and East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Access by road is via the M27 or A35. |
