ROMSEY

Romsey is an attractive market town that borders the new forest. It is just a few miles away from the beautiful cathedral town of Winchester, and is situated on the River Test, one of the finest salmon rivers in the UK. The Market Place in the town centre is dominated by an elevated statue of Lord Palmerston. The river crossing at Middlebridge made Romsey a strategic staging point on the route west and the town was especially popular with medieval monarchs heading towards the hunting grounds of the New Forest. Broadlands the home of Lord Mountbatten and formerly Lord Palmerston stands in spacious parkland and each year hosts the incredibly popular Game Fair and the Romsey Show.

Romsey Abbey, in a survey conducted by the Daily Telegraph, was named one of the 100 best loved places of worship.

Romsey is signposted from the M27 motorway, and can be found on the A27.  Excellent selection of boutique style shops and a beautifully stocked department store (Bradbeers).

Romsey also has a signal box that is an 1870 railway signal box preserved in its own dedicated site. The box itself has been restored to full working order and demonstrations of the box in operation can be given. Surrounding site features working signals and point, railway artefacts, preserved railway van and displays.

The signal box is in the grounds of Romsey County Infant School on Winchester Road (A3090), Romsey. Entrance gate by Plaza Parade, halfway between the Plaza theatre roundabout and railway bridge.
