FORDINGBRIDGEFordingbridge, the perfect place for a New Forest short break at half term or for a romantic Valentines weekend. Fordingbridge is located just off the A338, between Salisbury, to the North, and Ringwood to the east, sitting on the western banks of the River Avon.
This traditional riverside town, as its name implies, was originally a river crossing or ford. It was during the 14th century, that a Seven-arched bridge was built, and still survives to this day. A famous son, Augustus John, is commemorated with a statue near the old bridge.
The industrial history of Fordingbridge can be traced back through the many trades that were practised in the area, such as pottery. This can still be seen at the Branksome china factory on Shaftesbury Street. Brick making and textiles were also important in the town’s development.
Fordingbridge is a bustling centre from where to explore the rest of the new forest. New Forest Tourist Information can be found at Lyndhurst, Lymington and Ringwood. Information about nearby Salisbury Cathedral can be found at Salisbury Tourist Information.
Meeting the needs of locals and visitors alike are numerous pubs, restaurants and cafes along with independent shops. The local park provides an ideal area for picnicking, together with a children’s playground. |
