 | | CADNAM & MINSTEAD Cadnam and Minstead, the perfect place for a New Forest short break at half term or for a romantic Valentines weekend. Minstead is a lovely thatched village that boasts the delightful Trusty Servant pub, a village green where the forest ponies gather and a post office that sells delicious home made cakes. The 13th century church just up the wooded hill houses the grave of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes.
Minstead lies close to the spot in Upper Canterton, Cadnam marked by the ‘Rufus Stone’. This is where flame-haired William II, son of William the Conqueror, was killed by an arrow fired by Walter Tyrrell while hunting New Forest deer in the year 1100.
Minstead can be accessed from both the A31 and the A35. Nearby, along the lanes, is Furzey Gardens a secret informal garden which offers views over the new forest. Its attractions include a lake and a restored 16th century cottage. A good selection of new forest hotels can be found in nearby Lyndhurst, New Forest Tourist Information can be found at Lyndhurst, Lymington and Ringwood.
