Furniture Competition Opened up to Amateurs Since 2006 the New Forest Trust has organised an Exhibition of furniture made by Designer/Craftsmen at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show. This has been a resounding success, attracting trainee furniture makers from all over the UK for a competition especially for them. The Exhibition gives these young designer- makers an opportunity to look at the work of other trainees and professionals and compare notes and expose their talents to the general public. Winning the competition is a tremendous boost to their fledgling careers, giving them a high profile in the furniture world. However entry has always been restricted to students who are either studying in college or taking an apprenticeship, missing out on a whole group of people who make fabulous furniture - the talented enthusiastic amateurs. For the 2012 Exhibition they will be recognised and be able to showcase their expertise in this additional competition sponsored by Axminster Tools. This is for people who design and/or make furniture as a hobby, but do not use this activity as their major source of income. The winner, as judged by a team of professional furniture makers - Martin Grierson, James Ryan and Richard Williams, will be presented with a Voucher for £800. The New Forest Trust believes this will be particularly good for the trainees too, giving them an opportunity to see the craftsmanship these artisans provide, an aspect of furniture making that often takes second place in the colleges, where they concentrate more on design. Beautiful wood made into beautiful things. The Trust want to show the world what is being achieved by Professionals, non-Professionals and those learning to make things from wood, and this exhibition certainly showcases this beautifully. A few selected professionals are also invited to exhibit pieces that demonstrate their styles, design and craftsmanship. For further information go to www.newforesttrust.org.uk, where entry forms can be downloaded.
