New President for New Forest Show

The New Forest Agricultural Show Society elected The Right Reverend Michael Scott-Joynt to be their President for 2010 at their recent Annual General Meeting. "We are delighted that he has agreed to take up this position", said Chairman, Geoff Morgan. "The Bishop has shown great interest in the Show and his further involvement as President is welcomed by us all.  I am pleased that the two Hampshire organisations are working so closely together."

The Right Reverend Michael Scott-Joynt is the 96th Bishop of Winchester, to which See he was translated in 1995, following 8½ years as Area Bishop for Mid and North Staffordshire in the Diocese of Lichfield.  As Bishop of Winchester he is a member of the House of Lords and Prelate of the Order of the Garter.

Within the House of Bishops he has particular responsibility and interest in the fields of Church and State/Monarchy, Marriage, and Gender.  He chaired the Working Party which produced Marriage in Church After Divorce in January 2000.

Bishop Michael commented " I feel particularly honoured to be voted in as our County Show's President and hope I can contribute to the wonderful work they do supporting countryside activities and helping to preserve our rural heritage."

Bishop Michael and his wife, Lou, have three adult and married children and four grandchildren.

There are strong Partner relationships of the Diocese of Winchester with Anglican Dioceses in Burundi, the Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Bishop Michael is an active member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Great Lakes Region and Genocide Prevention.  Since visiting the Anglican Province of the Congo for the first time at the end of 2002, he is committed to working with others in the House of Lords and outside it, for an end to the chronic warfare, bloodshed and suffering in the Eastern DRC, and to the large scale pillage of its natural resources. 

He has also twice visited the Anglican Church in Myanmar/Burma, with which the Diocese of Winchester has been associated since the 1870s.
In the House of Lords he takes a particular interest in the Great Lakes Region of Africa, Equality and Discrimination, Marriage and Gender, Church and State, Asylum Regulation and Assisted Dying.
