The New Forest & Hampshire County Show is already well known for its terrier, ferret and sheep racing, but this year sees the debut event of pig racing!
Rebecca Fossett from Idlecote in Warwickshire has been racing her pigs for several years now and is bringing six to the Show to take part, each one named, numbered and with a 'jockey' in silks on its back. Their names raise a laugh to begin with:- Frankie de Porkie, Desert Porchid, Frances Bacon, Red Ham, Le Jambon and Marigold. Marigold was the star of the CBBC documentary on 'Animals at Work'!!
The pigs will race in the 'Ham National' over little jumps along a 50 metre track with Rebecca's two children Daisy (10 years old) and Leo ( 8 years old) acting as the pig handlers.
The pigs will arrive in style in their trailer, where they apparently fall asleep for the journey, luxuriating in the deep straw provided. This will be their first visit to an agricultural Show in the South, so we are honoured!
The New Forest & Hampshire County Show attracts over 90,000 visitors and will be held at New Park, on Tuesday 28th to Thursday 30th July. Tickets are already on sale at the Show office on 01590 622409, and a free child's ticket is being offered with every adult or senior citizen ticket purchased until June 30th. Accommodation in the New Forest during show week gets booked up early so browse the selection for New Forest cottages, self catering, b and b's, holiday parks, lodges and camp sites on vizzitnewforest.com.
New Forest Show Campsite (Long Meadow situated in New Park, Brockenhurst) Opens
The New Forest & Hampshire Agricultural Show Society is delighted to announce the re-launch of the campsite now named Long Meadow, in New Park. There are 100 pitches available from April to September, in this beautiful rural location in Brockenhurst right in the heart of the New Forest.
Toilet and shower facilities are on site and as you would expect dogs are welcomed, though asked not to be allowed to chase the fallow and red deer herds that frequent New Park. There is easy access from the campsite to a number of walks and a cycle path through the woods and open forest to Brockenhurst village with all its amenities.
This is part of the overall long term plans to update New Park to modern standards. Camping is on open grassland, not within the Ancient and Ornamental Woodland, therefore visitors have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional camping experience in the New Forest.
