BACK FROM THE BRINK | The woolly ‘mammoth’ donkeys thriving in Lymington’s backyard Once the most recognizable donkeys in the world with its winter dreadlock coat and long | woolly legs, the Baudet du Poitou is one of the most endangered species in the world. This gentle giant and favourite with children, standing between 13.5 and 16 hands high at the withers, was reduced to the last 44 documented animals in the world by 1977. Which is why it is surprising to find a small herd of them in the quiet lanes of Lymington. Woodford Farm is currently the only Baudet du Poitou stud in the UK with 21 animals registered in the French stud A Book and B Book. Their aim is to help bring this magnificent breed back from the brink of extinction, producing animals not only with good conformation and temperament, but which are also genetically sound.

Retired vetenary surgeon and breeder Annie Pollock | Historians believe that the Poitou existed in France well before the Roman occupation in 54BC. Certainly during the Middle Ages owning one was a sign of prestige afforded only by the nobility. The Poitou was cherished by French breeders for its superiority in mule production. Mules resulting from the cross between a Poitou and a Cheval Mulassier, a French horse breed, were considered the best work mules in the world. As the need for mules declined after the wars, the Poitou was nearly lost, particularly in post-war France where meat was in short supply. By very strict control and breeding there is now an estimated 500-600 pure and part-bred animals in the world today. Woodford Farm owner Annie Pollock says “we currently have 2 stallions including overall winner of the French Baudet du Poitou National Show 2006. We always have some pregnant females so please contact us to arrange a visit to view our donkeys for sale or to reserve foals. Donkeys are herd animals and need to have another donkey as a companion so we encourage dual ownership”. For more information please call 01590 610182 or visit http://www.woodfordfarm.co.uk/ |
