Wood Collected for National Competition |

Every year the New Forest Trust runs a national furniture making competition for students currently studying this subject. They are judged by three professional judges (Paul Gower , Matthew Burt and James Ryan for 2010) and the competition is held and the entries displayed in the Fine Crafted Wood marquee at the New Forest & Hampshire County Show ( 27th to 29th July).
The students come from across the UK and one of them - Ehsan Shirini collected wood from the New Forest to make his entry into the competition. Donald Thompson, one of the directors of the New Forest Trust helped him with the wood he chose ( cedar and Oak).
Ehsan is intending to make a pair of side tables to enter the competition and has been studying furniture making for three years - firstly with Rycotewood and now with Baring Furniture
The thinking behind holding these highly regarded furniture making competitions and having some of the top professionals as judges, was to encourage the use of New Forest timber for commercial, hobby or educational use. The Trust facilitated this Exhibition both for trainees entering the competition and professionals, because it believes that conservation of the New Forest requires a viable economy for those who maintain the livestock, woods and wildlife. Using trees available for harvest as a means of stimulating the local economy and encouraging wood related arts and crafts provides a sustainable economic stream of income.
All competitors will use primarily timber that has either come directly from the New Forest or sourced locally in the UK.

The New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be held from Tuesday 27th to Thursday 29th July at New Park, Brockenhurst.
