
Next, on our ever growing agenda was organising decorations for the reception venue and a florist for the bouquets, buttonholes and hotel flowers. I must admit, my knowledge of all things floral is pretty low, but as with most things that we’ve organised so far, I have found it easier to say what I don’t like and work from there. The temptation to decorate the venue myself was huge, if for no other reason than to save money. But when I sat down and worked out the details, it didn’t seem like a great idea anymore. The main thing that put me off - apart from the added stress - was the time involved. Most venues allow you to get in the day before to decorate, but unless you pay the venue to book this day, it can’t be guaranteed. The possibility of having to decorate the venue on the morning of my Wedding was not a prospect I fancied! So we decided to hire professional venue decorators instead. Getting the decorators in Ask your venue if they can recommend any decorators. It’s so much easier to talk to a decorator who knows your venue. That way, they know exactly what everything’s like. Also ask the venue itself as some will go to great lengths to help set up tables, decorate and generally make the place look lovely for your special day! To enable the decorators to give us a quote, we made an appointment at their offices to discuss what we wanted, what would work and to look at pictures of their previous weddings. The decorator we saw really knew what she was talking about and was very honest. One thing to bear in mind when considering how to decorate you venue, is whether there are any restrictions set by the venue on what you are allowed to use. Some places don’t allow candles, while others won’t allow you to use adhesives on certain surfaces. Our decorator is really familiar with our venue, so she knows exactly what works and where, making life easier for us. Florist A lot of Decorators have their own contacts in the floristry world but I decided to deal directly with our florist to make sure I got exactly what I wanted. I decided to use a local florist whom my mum knew, which was a relief. We met with her and gave her all the details and sat back and waited for her quote. The cost was very reasonable mainly to the fact that we just wanted something simple but I can see how the cost can get out of control if you want out of season flowers or very grand designs! Things to consider when choosing your wedding decorations: - 1. Will it be formal or casual? Elaborate or simple? Bold or neutral colours? Are you a traditionalist in favour of roses or lilies, or do you favour a more contemporary floral theme incorporating grasses, fruits and herbs? 2. Choose your palette from traditional whites and pastels to modern and adventurous dark hues and citrus shades. Bring a bridesmaid dress fabric swatch when you meet with your florist and choose coordinating shades.
3. Consider the season in which you are marrying. Typically, autumn weddings lend themselves to rich-toned flowers in burgundy, rust and deep yellows, while winter brides can create a sparkling wonderland of whites and silvers. Spring and Summer weddings call for pastels and juicy citrus hues.
4. Expect to spend about 8% of your overall budget on wedding flowers.
