You may notice something different about refuse trucks in the New Forest over the next few weeks; not only will they be carrying household rubbish they will also be emblazoned with six foot by ten foot banners carrying  important messages about the harm alcohol can cause.

This is one part of a campaign in the New Forest to prevent alcohol related crime and harm caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. The Alcohol Harm Diversion Scheme is aimed at young people and involves not only the police, but other local partners.

The main focus of the campaign is on education. Police and partner agencies will identify any young person in danger of consuming too much alcohol or is the subject of an alcohol seizure. A pack containing alcohol harm literature will be issued to that person and their family may be visited by police. Activities are also planned at local schools and colleges.

In addition, an interactive learning tool, known as Drink Angel, which is full of advice, information and quizzes is being used in schools and by the youth service. The website, www.drinkangel.co.uk  is also available. It is created by young people for young people.

New Forest District Safer Streets Sergeant Amanda Barry said: “This campaign is supported by a grant from the Home Office, which was secured as a result of a bid by the New Forest Crime and Disorder Partnership and is being launched during National Alcohol Awareness week.

“It is hoped that this early intervention with young people, led by the police Safer Streets team, and the high visibility advertising campaign will reduce the consumption of alcohol among young people in the New Forest. The aim of this work is not only to reduce crime but also to keep our young people safe and healthy.”

Cllr Goff Beck, NFDC portfolio holder for crime and disorder, said: “The council is delighted to support the campaign to prevent alcohol-related crime in the New Forest. Our refuse lorries are the perfect size to promote the message loud and clear across the district, particularly to young people who are at real risk following excessive consumption of alcohol.”
