Drivers told to stay under 40 in the New Forest

Country Watch officers stopped six drivers for speeding in the New Forest as part of the stay under 40 campaign.

Officers worked together with the Roads Policing Unit stopping drivers on the B3054 Beaulieu to Hythe road at Hilltop on Wednesday, September 29 between 8am and 10am.

Those drivers pulled over were caught travelling at speeds of between 46mph and 52mph on a 40mph road. Five of the drivers were offered the opportunity to attend a Driver Awareness Training course to educate them about safe driving instead of receiving points on their licence or a fine.

One of the drivers, a 17-year-old girl, was given a £60 fixed penalty ticket and three points on her licence. The student had only passed her test three months ago.

All of the drivers were spoken to by the Country Watch officers about the dangers of speeding on New Forest roads and were given the opportunity to view graphic photographs of vehicles that had collided with New Forest wildlife resulting in injury or death to the vehicle’s occupants or the animal.

Police Community Support Officer Alan McCaffery said: “I’m pleased to see that the majority of drivers were abiding by the speed limit and showing consideration for other road users and the New Forest’s wildlife.

“Unfortunately there were still drivers that were ignoring the speed limits. Hopefully these drivers will think twice before speeding again.

“The most shocking thing is that five out of the six drivers who were stopped today lived within the New Forest and are well aware of their surroundings and the many animals that roam within it.”
