A 72-year-old woman from Salisbury has been cautioned by police after allowing her dog to attack sheep at Martin Down Nature Reserve in Fordingbridge.
Officers from the Country Watch team received a complaint after the woman had twice allowed her dog to roam free on agricultural land at the nature reserve.
Her five-year-old Doberman gained access into a fenced off area containing sheep, chasing and pinning them down.
The first incident occurred on June 11 when the dog pinned down two sheep and caused an injury to another sheep's leg. The owner was spoken to by the site manager on this occasion but the dog was seen again on June 25 pinning down a lamb.
Following this incident the woman was arrested by police on suspicion of owning a dog which was worrying livestock. She attended a local police station on July 2 for questioning and received an adult police caution for the offence.
PC Scott Graham, from the Country Watch team, said: "The majority of dog owners are responsible and keep their dogs under control. However, this lady failed to adhere to the advice given by the Reserve Manager and permitted her dog to commit a further attack on the sheep. Such matters are very distressing to all involved and will be taken seriously by the Police."
Robert Lloyd, Senior Reserve Manager for Natural England, said: "To have lambs attacked by a dog just once is bad enough, but by the same dog within two weeks is staggering.
"Fortunately, this is a very rare occurrence and the vast majority of visitors with dogs who come to enjoy Martin Down abide by the request for close control. We very much welcome the Police's action in response to this matter."
